A Powerful Vision

The Vernier Science Center is an inclusive, student-centered space that resets the narrative at Portland State around science education and research. The facility offers outstanding teaching and learning spaces that reflect the quality of a PSU education, makes STEM visible and accessible, and expands understanding among students and the public of what science is and what research can look like.

Equity-Centered Design

Throughout the building's visioning and design phases, BIPOC students, faculty and community members—including those who identify as LGBTQIA+ and disabled—offered critical insights to help build spaces that will ultimately serve Oregon’s most diverse student population. This effort is not just about creating a welcoming environment. It is about de-centering whiteness in STEM education and fostering diverse perspectives in science.

What it brings to campus

The new building enables new opportunities. State-of-the-art teaching labs expose a larger number of students to authentic research experiences. Culturally affirming spaces and gardens support new curriculum around Indigenous traditional ecological and cultural knowledge. And an equity suite physically unites programs that support the success of first-generation students as well as those from groups historically underrepresented in science and technology.

Innovation for Oregon

Diversity of thought and experience is the foundation of innovation in every workplace and industry—especially in STEM fields. Connecting to industry and educational partners while educating a diverse and culturally competent workforce is how PSU helps our region create a more equitable and prosperous future post pandemic. The Vernier Science Center lives at the heart of this mission.

david and christine vernier

The Vernier Science Center is named in honor of longtime PSU advocates and STEM industry leaders Christine and David Vernier, founders of Oregon-based Vernier Software & Technology. Passionate about science education, the couple has pledged more than $10 million to Portland State students and facilities through decades of partnership and friendship.

EVERY GIFT COUNTS

Through the doors of the Vernier Science Center walk STEM students of every background, identity and lived experience. Inside they will find the teachers, mentors and peers to spark their ambition, support their success, and help them change the world. Contributions large and small matter.
