PSU Foundation Transitions to a 4-Day Workweek
Why reimagining the workweek matters
On September 29, 2025, the Portland State University Foundation will officially transition to a four-day workweek. The shift reflects the Foundation’s commitment to strengthening its ability to advance Portland State University through fundraising and engagement, building a high-performing team and supporting employee well-being. With support from 4 Day Week Global, the Foundation will transition to a Monday–Thursday schedule, with offices closed on Fridays.
“The Foundation is proud to join a growing movement of organizations proving that shorter workweeks can lead to greater results and creativity. We believe this step positions us—and Portland State—for long-term success," said Sarah Schwarz, President of the PSU Foundation.
By streamlining processes and focusing on high-value activities, the Foundation is positioning itself to deliver greater impact for Portland State. Research from 4 Day Week Global reports that across sectors, organizations making this shift consistently maintain or enhance productivity while boosting wellbeing, with some even seeing double-digit gains in efficiency or profitability.
The shift is designed to foster creativity and innovation across the PSU Foundation, aligning with Portland State University’s vision of an engaged and active urban campus. Foundation employees will work on campus for three core workdays each week (Tuesday through Thursday) and will have the option to work remotely on hybrid Mondays.
The new model also reflects a focus on people. Multiple global studies show that a four-day work week can enhance employee well-being and create more space for collaboration, mentorship and innovation. This approach enables the organization to be a competitive employer in a challenging job market while sustaining a strong, future-focused workplace culture.
By investing in its people and modernizing how work gets done, the Foundation is ensuring it can deliver on its mission to advance Portland State — today and for years to come.
