A Letter From Danna Guzman
When I started my first undergraduate term at PSU, nearly four years ago, I knew I had a love for chemistry and science that I wanted to follow. However, as a first-generation student I was struggling to navigate the university system. I felt alone and I didn't yet know how to ask for help. I quickly learned I needed to build a support system of mentors, fellow students, and faculty that I could lean on and learn from.
One of PSU’s strengths is how it allows its students to create their own path. I found community by immersing myself into different opportunities: taking on leadership roles with the Cultural Resource Centers, launching a PSU Student Ambassador bilingual program, mentoring fellow pre-med students, pursuing clinical lab research, and connecting with fellow first-gen STEM students. However, I know none of this would have been possible without the many scholarships and resources that donors generously provided. If it wasn't for people seeing the potential in me, before I saw it in myself, I wouldn't have been able to attend at all.
As a recent PSU graduate, my story is still being written. Earlier this year, I earned my bachelor's degree in chemistry and science. I began working as a research assistant at OHSU while applying for medical school MD/PhD programs in hopes of pursuing a career in which I can work with patients directly and contribute to bio-medical research at the same time. The skills I learned at PSU have given me a foundation to continue to grow and build my career. That wouldn't be possible without your generosity in support for scholarships and programs that I was able to thrive and benefit from.
Please consider making a gift today. Every contribution of any amount makes a difference in student's lives. Trust me, it doesn't go unnoticed. As a new class of PSU students comes to campus this fall, I hope they also lean into all the programs, connections and opportunities PSU has to offer — and how much they can contribute in return. Thank you for being a part of their success.
Thank you!
