Student Legislative Scholars

If you have a passion for public policy, advocacy or politics, consider becoming a PSU Student Legislative Scholar! Learn hands-on experience working with elected officials, staff and advocates. As a Legislative Scholar, you'll engage in briefings with legislators, lobbyists, organizers, program administrators and others. You'll also advocate for increased state and federal student financial aid and broader student support.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this program, you must be an undergraduate or graduate student currently enrolled at Portland State University. PSU students interested in public policy, advocacy and politics are encouraged to apply!

How it works

The PSU Advocates works in conjunction with Portland State University's Government Relations team to provide several different opportunities for students to get involved throughout the academic year. Participants must attend at least two policy briefings, two advocacy meetings and one advocacy activity during the academic year.

Attend at least two policy briefings

  • Friday, November 15: Meet with PSU alumni who are working in the state legislature and congress.
  • Friday, January 17: Attend an effective advocacy discussion.
  • Friday, March 14: Meet with an Oregon State Legislator to learn how ideas become laws.

Attend at least two committee meetings or PSU Advocates-sponsored events

  • Meetings are held virtually at noon on the third Wednesday most months during the academic year.

Participate in at least one Advocacy Activity

  • Attend a legislative or congressional town hall and ask a question.
  • Participate in PSU's annual Lobby Day.
  • Write an op-ed or letter to the editor.
  • Testify in support of higher education in front of an Oregon Legislature committee (with guidance from PSU staff).
  • Craft an action alert to be sent out to PSU Advocates, alumni, and students (with guidance from PSU staff).
  • Meet with an Oregon legislator, congressperson or their staff virtually or in person.

Application Process

Applications are open from October 14, 2024 until November 8, 2024. Applications received will be reviewed and accepted scholars will be notified by email by November 12, 2024, in advance of the kickoff event & first policy briefing held on Friday, November 15 from 11:30 am-1:00 pm.
